Hello! I’m Amy and I chair the committee of the CALM Volunteering Forum at Leeds Met. This means that with the other students on the CALM committee we make important decisions regarding socials, money and most importantly, VOLUNTEERING!
I am studying Sociology at Leeds Met and am just about to go into my 3rd year. I got involved with CALM after being a full time volunteer in my gap year and also volunteering at music festivals. I signed up at the SU fresher’s festival and got involved with the committee straight away. I was chairing my first committee meeting before I volunteered at my first project! Being chair of CALM is so great because I am able to see it develop and grow all the time, I always know what projects are happening and how they are progressing and I have met some fabulously dedicated people who love volunteering in their various projects and I’m sure would continue well past graduation if given the chance.
CALM runs some great projects and one off events. Whatever your passion or interest, whether it’s the environment, young children, old people, music, drama or sports, CALM will have a project for you. And, if we don’t run the project, one of our community partnerships will, so you can volunteer with them! CALM is also great for developing skills. Before I joined CALM, if someone had asked me to do face painting I would have thought they were mad. But after some good CALM training, I feel confident in painting children’s faces at all our events, puppies, tigers, butterflies even some skeletons and vampires!
My role means that I spend a lot of time dealing with the logistics of CALM and helping it grow and develop. We are always looking for more students to get involved with volunteering, whether it’s turning up at a project or running one! This year we are also looking for new committee members, so if you think that you also want to help lead CALM and help make it the strongest volunteering organisation in Leeds, then come and find us in the Student’s Union!
We can’t wait to hear from you!
Have fun!
Amy :D
