What is a STAR?

Student Academic Representatives (STARs) are there to represent the views of students on their course, to the relevant university staff and to the union through the Faculty Forums. STARs are there to pro actively seek out, identify and promote the views of your course mates on matters relating to the learning experience, and then represent those views at various points in the quality assurance framework such as focus groups, meetings or committees.

STARs provide as essential link between students and staff and in doing so perform the important role of feeding back the outcomes of meetings or decisions to the students on their course. It is important to realise that STARs are there to represent the views of others first and foremost so that comments and suggestions are of a collective and representative nature - that reflect the overall opinion of your fellow students. Being a STAR means that you can really make a difference and get the views of your course heard, plus it's a great experience and a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills.

How to become a STAR

Course STARs are recruited by level. Any student on a course is entitled to propose that they act as a STAR for that particular course. There will be a cap on recruitment at each level of the university's courses. Should there be an oversupply of volunteers, an election will be required within the third week of teaching, though this can vary from course to course. Only students belonging to the relevant level of the course will be eligible to vote.

To register yourself as interested, please download and fill out this expression of interest form and return it to the relevant person who is listed in the form.  If you are unsure who to  or have any other concerns, please contact Andrew Morwood at a.morwood@leedsmet.ac.uk or ring 0113 81 21853.

STARs & the Students' Union

The Students' Union's core priority is to represent every student. We're also dedicated to giving students the tools to represent themselves.

We help course STARs to fulfil their duties by giving day to day support and a full programme of training. We work with Faculty STARs to arrange the monthly Faculty Forums, which all STARs within a given faculty can attend and air their grievances with members of university staff or in a closed forum with the union and other students. The Students' Union also offer a full programme of training for STARs which takes place in October and November and helps new STARs develop the necessary skills to affect real change for students.
