Academic Appeals
What is an Academic Appeal?
If you are unhappy with your results after your Board of Examiners have made their decision, or if you feel that your results have been affected by problems on the course, then you may be able to request an Academic Appeal.
The University recognises that ‘all students have the right to seek an Appeal Hearing to reconsider a decision of a Board of Examiners or Examination Committee’ but also stresses that ‘Appeal Hearings may only proceed where the University has agreed that there are valid grounds for the appeal.’
The Leeds Met Student Union Advice Service can offer advice on how to submit an academic appeal, including help in understanding the ‘grounds for appeal’ but do get in touch quickly – you only have 15 working days to appeal after your results are first released. You need to have very strong reasons for requesting an appeal late, so don’t delay.
What are the ‘valid grounds’ for requesting an Appeal Hearing?
There are 4 valid grounds for appeal. These are:
- Computational Error
- Material Procedural or Adminsitrative Error
- Programme Management Deficiences
- Previously Undisclosed Extenuating Circumstances
Please note that you are unable to request an appeal hearing if you disagree with the academic judgement of a Board of Examiners – the University will refuse to accept this as a valid ground for appealing your results.
If you would like more information and advice on whether you may have valid grounds for appeal please contact the Leeds Met Student Union Advice Service.
How do I submit an appeal?
If you decide that you do have valid grounds for appealing your results you will need to complete and submit an Appeal Request Form within 15 working days of your results being published.
You can click here to go to the University's Appeals Webpage where you can download an Appeal Request Form, view the University's Appeal Regulations and Guidance and find information on where to send your completed Appeal Request form to.
