I’m feeling unwell, but I’m not registered with a doctor, what should I do?

We would obviously recommend that you make sure that you are registered with a doctor at the start of term, before you get ill. However, if you haven’t done this and are feeling unwell, there a couple of options available to you so that you can get appropriate medical advice and treatment.

Students: Get health service information straight to your phone

Students in Leeds
can now get information on a wide range of health services such as local
pharmacies, doctors and minor injury units straight to their mobile phone.

NHS Leeds is working with young people in the city
to encourage them to take advantage of a range of quick and simple technologies
in a bid to reduce the number of people using A&E inappropriately.

Young people can find out where their nearest
service is - along with its contact details - by texting one of the following key words to 64746

  • Doctor (for GPs)
  • Walk (for walk-in centres)
  • Dentist (for dentists)
  • Pharmacy (for pharmacy)
  • Accident (for A&E departments)

Students can also download the free Choose Well app available for iPhone
and Android. The app enables people to find the nearest and most appropriate
NHS service, wherever they may be within Yorkshire and the Humber
region, with the simple touch of a button.

Latest figures show that around eight percent of
people who use A&E could receive the help they need at another location
such as their local pharmacy, GP or minor injury or illness centre. Using the
right service helps to reduce waiting times in A&E and ensures that people
with minor illness and injury can be seen and treated more quickly at the
appropriate location.

Pauline
Roberts, Urgent Care Manager for NHS Leeds says, “Coming to a
new city can be
a daunting prospect so we want to make sure students have all the information
they need to stay healthy and well while they’re here. The app and text
services are really easy to use and mean that students can get information
straight to their mobiles which will signpost them to convenient local
services.”

Mellissa Savage is a local student who is
supporting the campaign to raise awareness of health services. She says it is
important students get the right advice about health care when they first start
university, so if they fall ill or need medical assistant they know where to go
to receive the right treatment.”

Anyone in Leeds with urgent health needs can be
assessed quickly and sent to the most appropriate service  by calling West Yorkshire Urgent Care service
0345 605 99 99.
